Lowballed

Our America: Lowballed Documentary and Panel Discussion

Wednesday, April 19, 2023

5:00 – 8:00 PM (ET)

The AMP at 16 Tech in Indianapolis, IN

It’s happening to Black and Latino families in neighborhoods across the country. People are trying to refinance their mortgage or finance the purchase of a new home all for it to be derailed by a mundane and often overlooked step in the lending process – the property appraisal.

The people on all sides of the transaction – whether they’re the owners or the buyers – are being hit with home appraisals far lower than they expected when compared to what similar homes are selling for in their neighborhoods or even compared to re-appraisals of their own homes.

In some cases, the differences are staggering and potentially life-changing for families. The cost of finding themselves “lowballed” can be tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Or it can prematurely end the dream of homeownership altogether. A new documentary, Our America: Lowballed, delves into this issue. The documentary also highlights some Indianapolis-based homeowners through the telling of their stories and also highlights the work of fair housing organizations across the nation.

In partnership with The Holliday Collaborative Agency, the FHCCI is sponsoring a showing of this powerful documentary followed by a panel discussion.

The event will be April 19, 2023 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at The AMP at 16 Tech. Here’s the schedule:

  • 5:00-6:00 PM: Networking/Food
  • 6:00 PM: Kick off showing
  • 6:05 PM: Begin showing documentary
  • 7:20-8:00 PM: Panel discussion/Q & A
There will be free food and networking prior to the documentary screening. We will then begin showing the documentary. After the screening, we will have a panel discussion with Carlette Duffy, Indianapolis homeowner featured in this documentary, Amy Nelson with the Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana, Julian Glover with ABC News, Larry Miller with WUSA9 in Washington D.C., and Myra Lillard with Home Guide Realty Services. Our panelists will have insight on appraisal bias either through experience or their reporting on the issue and provide information on how we can fight back against this injustice. Join us for this important discussion! Invite your family and friends!
