FHCCI Housing Discrimination in Tenant Screening Project
Have you been denied housing in Indiana due to a previous eviction, a misdemeanor, a felony, an error on a background check, or an expunged record? The Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana (FHCCI) wants to talk to you to learn more about your experiences.
Please call us at 317-644-0673 or email us at info@fhcci.org to answer a few questions which will help us in determining any potential fair housing policies or where there may be needed policy changes. Translation and interpretation services available, as needed.

While the federal Fair Housing Act doesn’t explicitly list criminal history or eviction as protected classes, persons who are members of several of the Fair Housing Act protected classes (i.e. Black and Brown persons, persons with disabilities, certain genders/sexes, presence of minor children) are commonly affected by housing policies based on their criminal history/justice involvement and/or past evictions. As such, you may have rights under fair housing laws but we need to talk to you about your specific experience.
For example, the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) has issued guidance on the fair housing concerns those with justice involvement, credit scores, and/or evictions face frequently across the country. To learn more about your rights under fair housing laws, please visit our Criminal History Education page here.
