Our Testimonials
The Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana (FHCCI) has helped numerous people across Indiana working to ensure open housing for all. Housing is a fundamental need and the FHCCI is here to help people navigate barriers and challenges, raise awareness of issues, and challenge discrimination. Fair housing laws protect all of us, in multiple ways, in our personal housing transactions. Young and old, people of all races and ethnicities, with and without disabilities, all household types, and across income levels. A few of our clients have included:
- …the older adults with disabilities living in an Indianapolis senior complex with an elevator that had been broken for six weeks causing them to have to have to stay in their apartments or crawl up and down steps.
- …a Jeffersonville single mother of three, who was denied a two-bedroom unit because she would be sharing one of the bedrooms with her 9-month old baby.
- …an Indianapolis woman whose neighbor was making racial slurs and threats to Black and Latino residents, including to minor children, impacting her ability to stay in her home and beloved neighborhood.
- …the Anderson women who were solicited with sexual favors in exchange for repairs, touched and groped, and endured sexual comments by the property’s maintenance man.
- …an Indianapolis woman who was encountering domestic violence from an ex-partner at her current housing and, with the FHCCI’s help, was able to locate a new and safe housing unit.
- …an Elkhart couple who were denied rental housing because of a non-violent incident that was showing up on the husband’s record from more than 30 years ago.
- …a Shelbyville renter with disabilities whose housing provider wouldn’t allow her to install a ramp or a step-in shower at her cost.
