Unwelcomed Exhibit (FW Urban)
The Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana (FHCCI), in partnership with the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Human Relations Commission and the Fort Wayne Urban League, is hosting, Unwelcomed: A Fair Housing History of Sales & Lending Discrimination, an interactive exhibit, from September 28 through October 27, 2024.
The free exhibit will be open to the public and will educate participants on the systemic barriers that have impacted today’s neighborhoods through redlining, racial covenants, steering, neighborhood intimidation, and other forms of housing discrimination. Modern-day forms of housing discrimination in sales and lending will also be highlighted.
“Fort Wayne Urban League is proud to partner with Metro to have a tough but needed discussion about the importance of closing the disparity gaps that keep too many minority people from being homeowners,” said Aisha Arrington, CEO of the Fort Wayne Urban League.
“By understanding the history of housing discrimination, we can better identify its lingering effects, develop more effective policies to promote fair housing, and work towards creating more equitable and integrated communities,” said Nikki Quintana, Executive Director of the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Human Relations Commission.
The two-sided 12 panel exhibit, Unwelcomed, will be located at the Fort Wayne Urban League, 2135 Hanna Street, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46803. New to this exhibit for Fort Wayne residents are six additional panels focused on Fort Wayne with specific historical context and modern-day data to complement the original exhibit.
In addition to the exhibit, a discussion will be held at the Fort Wayne Urban League on October 10, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. Amy Nelson, Executive Director of the FHCCI, will speak about historical and contemporary housing discrimination in the U.S. including inequities featuring Fort Wayne. This talk will also spotlight information featured in the exhibit as well as updated demographics and modern-day disparities. Attendance for the discussion is limited to the first 100 people. “Through the Fair Housing Center’s work, it has become evident that many Hoosiers are unaware of the government policies and private actions that have led to generations of lost wealth, particularly to residents of color, through barriers to homeownership,” stated Amy Nelson, Executive Director of the FHCCI. “It is our hope, through the Unwelcomed exhibit, to give viewers an opportunity to learn how or why they may live in segregated neighborhoods and what they can do to combat these discriminatory practices.”
The exhibit is funded through support by First Merchants Bank. For the additional references noted on the exhibit panel or to view a digital version of the exhibit, click here.
