Response to Hate Focus Group

You are invited to attend a focus group on March 23, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 PM, hosted by the Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana (FHCCI), in an effort to “gain a wide-range of perspectives from those willing to work together to address hate crimes and/or hate related incidents in a coordinated community response in Central Indiana.”

In recent months, we have witnessed both locally and nationally an alarming increase in hate based crimes and incidents. Indiana also remains one of only five states without a hate crime law. The FHCCI has received short term funding to build a collaborative, advocacy network to respond to hate crimes and incidents in Central Indiana; create resource and training tools to combat hate; and advance the safety and inclusion of targeted individuals or groups.

This collaborative project, supported by a grant from the Open Society Foundations, will result in a coordinated community response to hate crimes and other hate based incidents in the Central Indiana. You can learn more about the funding for this project here. Due to seating limitations, all participants must RSVP in advance. RSVP HERE

In advance of the meeting, please consider the following:

  • What would you identify as the most critical issue to address hate-based crimes or incidents in the Indianapolis area?
  • What resources are needed in the community to better combat and address hate crimes or hate related incidents?
  • What would you identify as three action steps to improve the safety and inclusion of those groups facing hate crimes or incidents in the Indianapolis area?
  • What do you see as the most significant commonality among all groups working together for the safety and inclusion of individuals in our community who are often targets of these crimes or incidents?
  • What do you see as the most significant barrier to working together to achieve the safety and inclusion of individuals in our community who are often targets of these crimes or incidents?
  • What is your greatest personal concern about the future safety or inclusion of diverse populations facing hate crimes or incidents in Indianapolis area?
  • What are the “strategic questions” for long-term responses to hate crimes or incidents in Indianapolis that you would like a strategic plan for a Coalition/Network to address?

This focus group meeting will be held at the Julia M. Carson Government Center, Conference Room A, in Indianapolis. Parking is free.
