Jobs – Part-Time Positions

Fair Housing Tester/Mystery Shopper (Hours Vary By Your Schedule/Monetary Stipends Paid): Are you interested in making fair housing a reality in Central Indiana? The Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana (FHCCI) needs a diverse group of dependable, conscientious people 18 years and older to assist in gathering information about housing practices. These persons are commonly referred to as “fair housing testers” or “mystery shoppers.” Testers are provided training and a stipend for their time and related expenses. Stipends vary depending on the task assigned.

Please note that this is not a typical part-time position. These positions are classified as part-time positions although hours are based upon your availability and tests needed. Testers are used when we have a need for a tester and a tester has availability. Some testers only test once in awhile while others test more frequently. Because of the unique info-gathering of fair housing testers in helping to uncover housing discrimination, detailed information is requested as part of the application and to assist in matching testers for tests.

Testers are of various racial and ethnic groups, all genders, over a broad range of ages with and without disabilities. Testers serve an important role in identifying when housing discrimination may or may not be occurring. The testing process has been consistently supported by federal courts as a legitimate and necessary method to identify practices of unlawful housing discrimination. For more information on our testing program, see our testing brochure English or Spanish.

To participate in our testing program, YOU MUST:

  • Be detail oriented
  • Be a good listener and observer
  • Have a phone and access to a computer
  • Have a desire to work on behalf of civil rights protections
  • Have a desire to work and interact with, as well as demonstrate respect for individuals and groups without regard to race, religion, gender, color, national origin, familial status, disability, ancestry, sexual orientation, age and/or military service veteran status

You should also have your own means of reliable transportation, although, in limited situations transportation may not be necessary. Due to the potential to be a witness to a fair housing violation and federal grant requirements, testers are screened for criminal history and any possible conflicts of interest. Please note that testers are considered part-time employees. If you have any questions or are interested in applying, contact the FHCCI for more information or to receive an application at (info@fhcci.org) with “Fair Housing Tester” in the email header. You’ll be contacted shortly after receipt about next steps.

Jobs – Interns

At this time, the FHCCI is not accepting any interns due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jobs – Volunteers

Each year, the Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana hosts an annual conference in April. We seek volunteers to assist us that day with registration, set up, and clean up. Throughout the year, we may also have a need for volunteers for various projects. If interested, contact the FHCCI.
